Medical YouTube channel MedCram recently discussed the preliminary fatality data in the United States that was released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Released on March 18, the article was entitled “Severe Outcomes Among Patients with Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) — United States, February 12–March 16, 2020.”

The study suggested that “fatality was highest in persons aged followed by 3% to 11% among persons aged 65–84 years, 1% to 3% among persons aged 55-64 years.”

Dr. Roger Seheult, a clinical professor and the co-founder of MedCram, said: “For the greater than 85 years old there were more deaths than there were in the intensive care unit that maybe because of palliative care or hospice where you have patients that are hospitalized but never go into the intensive care unit before they pass.”

The American agency furthered that COVID-19 can result in severe disease, including hospitalization, admission to an intensive care unit, and death, especially among older adults.

However, Dr. Seheult reminded that this preliminary fatality outcome is based on very limited testing and does not represent accurate fatality rate of virus.

“The fatality data only becomes more accurate as testing increases and captures more people with mild or no symptoms.”

He added that the number of confirmed cases in the US have significantly increased due to the massive testing but despite that there remains a small percentage of critical cases out of the total.

Just recently, White House’s coronavirus task force also warned that younger people could also suffer severe health risks from the pandemic.

“There are concerning reports coming out of France and Italy about some young people getting seriously ill, and very seriously ill in the ICUs,” said Deborah Birx, a physician and ambassador.

Experts claim that there are different risks of getting severe symptoms across age groups that’s why it is essential to practice social distancing and other precautionary measures.
