King Harald V Of Norway

OSLO, September 1 — King Harald V of Norway died on Friday, August 23, 2026, at the National Hospital in Oslo at 6:35 a.m., according to the royal court. He was 89 years old. His passing ends a reign that began in January 1991 after the death of his father, King Olav V, and spanned more than three decades of national stability and economic transformation.

Born in 1937 in Asker, near Oslo, Harald was the first Norwegian prince born in the country since King Olav IV in 1370. At age three, he fled the Nazi occupation with his mother and sisters to Sweden and then by boat to the United States, while his father and grandfather went into exile in Britain with Norway’s government-in-exile.

The family was reunited in Norway in June 1945, shortly after the end of World War II. During their time in the U.S., the Norwegian royals were often guests at the White House. Harald carried out his first official duty at age six, christening new warplanes at a Norwegian air base in Canada.

He attended public schools, the Norwegian military college, and Oxford University. A lifelong sailor, he represented Norway at several Olympic Games, following in the footsteps of his father, King Olav V, who won Olympic gold in sailing in 1928.

In 1987, Harald skippered his yacht to a gold medal in the World Match Racing Championship. In 1968, Harald married his school sweetheart, Sonja Haraldsen, refusing proposals from several European noblewomen. Their marriage marked a modernization of the Norwegian royal house, as Sonja became the first commoner to marry a Norwegian heir apparent since the Middle Ages.

The couple had two children: Princess Märtha Louise and Crown Prince Haakon, who automatically became King Haakon VIII upon Harald’s death. As monarch, Harald served a largely symbolic role under Norway’s constitutional monarchy, where real political power rests with the elected parliament and the prime minister, currently Jonas Gahr Støre. Norway’s population is approximately 5.5 million.

Harald reigned for more than three decades, during which Norway experienced an oil-and-gas-driven economic boom. Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre praised Harald in a statement, saying he demonstrated “an unwavering faith in the Norwegian people” and helped “us to see the best in ourselves — and in one another.” Harald was known for refusing to abdicate despite the trend among other European monarchs in recent years, choosing to serve until his death.

His grandfather, Haakon VII, was elected king of Norway in 1905 following the dissolution of the union between Sweden and Norway, marking the beginning of Norway’s independent monarchy in the modern era. With Harald’s passing, the throne now passes to his son, King Haakon VIII, who assumes the role amid a shifting European landscape and continued domestic focus on energy transition and social cohesion. The royal court has announced a period of national mourning, with details of the state funeral to be released in the coming days.

All eyes will now turn to how the new reign shapes Norway’s path forward.
