Brunson and Styles Raise Banner at MSG

NEW YORK, November 2, 2026 — The story begins not with a buzzer sounding, but with a roar that sounded remarkably like one. When Jalen Brunson stepped onto the stage at Madison Square Garden on Saturday, October 31, the arena erupted in chants of “MVP,” a sonic signature usually reserved for basketball nights. He was there to present pop star Harry Styles with a commemorative banner, honoring the singer’s record-setting 30-night residency that concluded that evening.

For those involved, the moment was a culmination of a peculiar and charming cross-pollination between New York’s two most famous entertainment engines. Brunson, the captain of the New York Knicks and the 2026 NBA Finals MVP, walked out in a hat emblazoned with the slogan “Techno Is My Boyfriend,” a phrase Styles has frequently worn himself. It was a small, knowing nod between two figures who had found an unlikely rapport during the residency.

A Banner for the Rafter

The residency itself was a logistical and cultural feat. It began on August 26, 2026, with a special guest performance by Jamie xx, and stretched over nine weeks. According to MSG Entertainment, the sold-out run drew more than half a million fans from all 50 U.S. states and 79 countries. That is a staggering reach for a single city venue, transforming the Garden into a global hub for Styles’ new album, *Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally.*, which debuted at No. 1 on both the Billboard 200 and the Official U.K. Albums Chart.

The banner raising was not an isolated incident of celebrity camaraderie; it was a reciprocal gesture. Brunson noted that Styles had previously joined him and his team for the Knicks’ own banner night a few weeks prior. “I just wanted to appear and congratulate you on your 30th night,” Brunson said from the stage. “A couple weeks ago, Harry was so kind to join me and my team on our banner night, and I thought I, on behalf of MSG and the Knicks, would do the same.”

This exchange highlights a growing trend in live entertainment where the lines between sports and music are blurring. The Knicks had the night off, having lost 98-93 to the Philadelphia 76ers on Friday, which allowed Brunson to attend the spectacle. He had already attended two of Styles’ previous shows, including one in September where Styles publicly dubbed him the “King of New York.” The crowd’s reaction to Brunson’s appearance was immediate and loud, with ESPN describing the uproarious MVP chants as a fitting sendoff for a player in his title-winning year.

Costumes and City Icons

The final two nights of the residency were designated as “Harryween,” a Halloween-themed tradition Styles launched in 2021 during an earlier 15-day MSG run. The celebrations were deeply embedded in New York City culture. On Friday, October 30, Styles opened the show dressed as 1970s-era Elvis Presley. His band and dancers wore outfits based on his own iconic looks from Coachella, the Met Gala, and the Grammys. For the encore, he emerged in his 2010 *X-Factor* audition outfit to perform Stevie Wonder’s “Isn’t She Lovely,” the song that originally launched his career with One Direction.

The Saturday finale, however, was a tribute to the city itself. The band took the stage dressed as local icons, including the Statue of Liberty, Andy Warhol, and Anna Wintour. Styles then appeared as the “Pizza Rat,” a reference to a notorious 2015 meme of a rat dragging a slice of pizza down a subway station stairwell. He wore a furry brown onesie with oversized pink ears, a long tail, and black sunglasses, carrying a giant foam slice of pizza.

The performance was as much about atmosphere as it was about music. Styles delivered a cover of Talking Heads’ “Psycho Killer,” a song deeply rooted in New York’s musical history, before reverting to his standard setlist. The distinction between the concert and the separate fan event, “Spotify Presents: Harryween,” was clear. The latter, held on October 22, was a dance party curated with Despacio, featuring a sound system by James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem and David and Stephen Dewaele of Soulwax and 2manydjs. Styles did not attend that event; it was conceived as a way to share the dance-floor influences behind his album, not as a second opportunity to see him onstage.

A Lasting Presence

The implications of this residency extend beyond the night of the banner raising. Madison Square Garden has unveiled a new “Defining Moments” exhibit on its sixth-floor concourse, featuring memorabilia from the residency. According to MSG, fans attending arena events can visit the exhibit, giving the run a lasting presence beyond the banner. This ensures that future visitors, even those who missed the concerts, can encounter a record of the performances.

The event also underscores the commercial and cultural weight of such residencies. Tour sponsor American Express ran pop-up shops across lower Manhattan throughout the nine-week block. Halfway through the residency, AmEx invited 10 randomly selected fans to experience the song “Together, Together” live for the first time. These activations turned the city into a stage, with fan encounters on the Williamsburg Bridge and organized events like One Direction karaoke and post-Harryween bar crawls keeping the singer’s presence felt across New York.

For the Knicks, the partnership with Styles has become a point of local pride. Brunson’s appearance gave New York basketball fans another reason to claim the pop star as one of their own. The venue has honored Styles with a rafters banner before; in 2022, following his *Love On Tour* stand that ran from August 20 through September 21, the arena raised a banner commemorating that earlier run. This time, the scale was significantly larger, with 30 consecutive shows.

The Road Ahead

The New York finale does not mark the end of Styles’ touring schedule. The *Together, Together* tour heads to Australia later this month, with shows beginning November 27 at Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium, followed by dates at Sydney’s Accor Stadium in December. These will be his final shows of the year.

The tour resumes in the United States in April 2027 with a 25-date extension launching in Phoenix. The North American leg will include stops in Dallas, Los Angeles, Toronto, Atlanta, and Chicago. This leg marks new territory for the production; Yahoo Finance reports the tour will return to 12 cities in 2027 and play U.S. and Canadian stadiums for the first time. The European leg begins July 2 in Berlin, with additional dates in Paris, Madrid, Rome, and Dublin.

The tour is slated to conclude in August 2027 with three consecutive shows at London’s Wembley Stadium. For now, Madison Square Garden keeps its newest banner, and Brunson gets to keep his hat, at least until he makes good on his promise to return it to Styles. The next time the Knicks host the Brooklyn Nets at the Garden on Monday, the arena will return to its basketball roots, but the echo of the MVP chants from Saturday will linger in the rafters.
