City, October 1, 2026 At the heart of the American food culture, the James Beard Foundation is making a significant shift for 2027, introducing changes that reflect the rapid evolution of the industry. The new additions to the James Beard Awards include dedicated short-form media categories, which acknowledge the increasing influence of social media in food discovery. For those involved, these changes represent a recognition of the contributions of content creators and food professionals, as well as the changing ways consumers engage with food and dining experiences.
The new categories, which include Cooking and Instructional (Short-Form) and Food Culture (Short-Form), allow entrants to submit three to five pieces from various platforms, each no longer than five minutes. TikTok emerged as the top restaurant-discovery channel among Gen Z respondents, with 38% citing it.
This shift aligns with the findings reported by Toast in July 2026, which found that 50% of diners used social media to find restaurants, with 56% of urban diners relying on it. The changes also expand the America’s Classics category to include bars that have been in operation for at least 15 years, up from the previous 10-year requirement. This expansion recognizes the cultural and historical significance of long-standing bars alongside restaurants.
Additionally, bakers and dessert professionals now have their own category, no longer needing to share recognition with restaurant pastry chefs, and they do not necessarily require a storefront. These updates reflect a broader trend in the food industry, where content creation and platform visibility are increasingly crucial for hospitality businesses, as noted by Dave Roberts of Cornell University’s Nolan School of Hotel Administration.
The new categories and eligibility changes not only recognize the contributions of creators and food professionals but also highlight the changing ways in which consumers discover and engage with food and dining experiences. Submissions for the 2027 James Beard Awards are open through November 30, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. ET, providing ample time for eligible individuals and establishments to apply. The 2027 James Beard Awards are set to reflect the evolving landscape of American food culture, with the introduction of dedicated short-form media categories and expansions to existing categories.
These changes highlight the increasing influence of social media in food discovery and the growing importance of content creation and platform visibility for hospitality businesses. For those involved, these updates represent a recognition of their contributions and the changing ways consumers engage with food and dining experiences.
